Today, let me focus on the years 1978 and 2022. Why? … Take it easy.
You will find the reason later on.

In 1978, I worked in a trading company’s Latin America Section. I had
a decent command of English; however, the Spanish spoken in its coun-
tries was all Greek to me, and I struggled with writing correspondence
and receiving phone calls from overseas in Spanish.

¿Con quién hablo, por favor?(Who am I speaking to, please?)
I was desperate to learn as many boilerplate expressions as possible
to respond and not disgrace myself in the company.

It is a fond recollection of bygone days.

44 years later, since I entered the workforce, surprisingly, I’ve mellowed
out and matured to some extent but become a bit bigoted and frustrat-
ed about herbivorous-type people. In 2022 this year, it is a time when I
require a significant change in mindset.

Here comes the word problem that makes me help reverse my way of
thinking, and let me give it a shot.

Evaluate “\((1978)^{2} + (2022)^{2}\)”.

Here is my solution.

First of all, let me put \(2000 = x\) and \(22 = y\).

\((x – y)^{2} + (x + y)^{2}\)
\(= x^{2} – 2xy + y^{2} + x^{2} + 2xy + y^{2}\)
\(= 2x^{2} + 2y^{2}\)
\(= 2(x^{2} + y^{2})\)
\(= 2(4000000 + 484)\)
\(= 2(4000484)\)
\(= 8000968\)

Somewhere between 1978 and 2022, I’ve made a slew of mistakes in
both my private life and the workplace. However, I believe I could en-
rich my experiences.

Not failure, but low aim, is a crime.
I will aim high, keeping young at heart.
