Hi there!

Have you ever been promoted to sign up for a membership for some commodities or services? A discount offer you can enjoy after becoming a member does not always guarantee purchasing goods at a lower price until you’ve bought a certain amount. Caution is advised.

Does it pay off to sign up for the membership? Today, let’s solve an inequality word problem to see how it works.

The membership fee for a foreign language school is 5000 yen, and the member can buy Free Time lesson tickets at a 5% discount. When you buy 500 yen per ticket, how many tokens should you buy to make the total buying sum as a member less than the one without signing up for membership?

Here is my solution to the problem.

When you buy the ticket in \(x\) pieces, the purchasing amount becomes \(500x\).

The total amount price as a member, including the membership fee, is

\(5000 + 500x・0.95 = 5000 + 475x\)

In the following inequality, you can buy the total tickets as a member less expensive than the one you buy without being a member.

\(5000 + 475x < 500x\)
Then \(25x > 5000\), \(x > 200\)

Therefore, \(x\geq 201\).

Better not to sign up for membership unless you can afford to buy 201 and more tickets. In other words, 200 pieces are a break-even point for membership.

Today, again, my Yellow Chart Math Ⅰ+A navigates my study in mathematics. Hopefully, you won’t dismember your family after signing up for membership in a foreign language school.

Stay tuned, and expect to see my next post.

Keep well.

Frank Yoshida
