Described below is the sentence quoted from “Times, Sunday Times.”
The latest sign of a flagging economy comes as central banks line up increasingly extreme measures to combat the global slowdown.
The word “flagging” is almost synonymous with “sagging, stagnant, downturn, nosediving,” and whatnot. In my Business English Class, I often give my online students a pop quiz asking about proper collocations, synonyms, and antonyms.
Under the status quo, I don’t think Japan’s economy is too stagnant; however, it would be correct to say, “The economy even a few years down the road is invisible.” Is the Japanese government doing any pump-priming policy?
Today, let me challenge a word problem related to a “flag.” Don’t be depressed with a flagging flag, OK?
An 8m tall flagpole casts a 12m shadow. What is the angle that the sun hits the flagpole? Round off your answer to one decimal place.
Here is my solution to the problem.
Put the angle that the sun hits the flagpole, \(x°.\)
We need to use the inverse tangent ratio.
\(\tan x = \frac{12}{8}\)
\(\tan^{-1}x = \frac{12}{8}(=\frac{3}{2}) = 56.3099…\approx 56.3°\)
