Here’s Part 3 of the read-for-free series of my parody short novel: “Katta Aita: The Man Who Dared to Conquer the Eiken Grade 1 Exam”<\/em><\/strong>.<\/p>\n This is a “parody,” folks. So if you\u2019re the kind of person who takes everything seriously and gets mad like, \u201cWhat the hell is this?!\u201d, then do yourself a favor\u2014don\u2019t read it.<\/p>\n Otherwise, sit back and enjoy the glorious nonsense of this story.<\/p>\n \u3000\u3000\u3000<\/p>\n \u2014What? You can\u2019t go to New York because you\u2019re broke!? Wahahaha! Three teeth, Mitsuwa Soap, Hagatha Christie and the “Murder on the Orient Express”! Life isn’t all about money. When you\u2019ve got no cash, you gotta get creative. Take a trip to the \u201cbath.\u201d Not Bath, England\u2014just your local bathhouse. Yeah, a sent\u014d. And no, it\u2019s not Sentosa Island in Singapore.<\/p>\n “Your yakisoba’s getting cold, ya know,” she said.<\/p>\n \u2014If your home bath\u2019s boring, spice things up with a trip to the public bath. You\u2019ll feel like a whole new you!<\/p>\n Katta was confused. Why go to the bathhouse when you\u2019ve got one at home?<\/p>\n \u2014No reason to go? That\u2019s exactly why you should go! It\u2019s called “rebel without a cause.” Now go, and flip the next page!<\/p>\n Katta didn’t flip the page. Instead, he shut the book flat.<\/p>\n The sauce on his “Gesshin Yakisoba” wasn\u2019t even mixed right. Still, like a hyena on a mission, he devoured it in under thirty seconds. Gulped down a glass of water, let out an \u201cAhh!\u201d, and stood up.<\/p>\n “I’m heading to the bath!”<\/p>\n Naiyo couldn\u2019t believe what she\u2019d heard.<\/p>\n “Why not use the one here at home?” But before she could stop him, Katta was out the door with a towel, washbasin, and fresh underwear.<\/p>\n Their apartment sat atop a rundown construction site\u2014an old two-story wooden complex housing ten families. Katta and Naiyo lived upstairs, forever nervous about the creaky stairs.<\/p>\n Just a few minutes downhill from the main road was the neighborhood bathhouse, \u201cGokuraku Onsen\u201d\u2014a local gem said to cure rheumatism and stiff shoulders. A hit with the elderly.<\/p>\n Katta nervously slid open the door to the men\u2019s side.<\/p>\n “Welcome!”<\/p>\n A young woman\u2019s voice\u2014a rarity these days.<\/p>\n Too shy to make eye contact, he asked, “How much?”<\/p>\n “250 yen,” she said.<\/p>\n Still avoiding eye contact, Katta handed over the coins with trembling hands and headed to the locker room. As he peeled off his shirt, he froze.<\/p>\n Why should he strip naked in front of a young woman? His belly was starting to pop out lately. This felt more like torture than hygiene\u2014thanks a lot, English book author Jordan Yoshita.<\/p>\n But rules are rules. No nudity, no bath. So he reluctantly removed his pants.<\/p>\n From the women\u2019s side, an older lady chatted with the cashier. “You’re in your third year of English Lit, huh? That\u2019s impressive.”<\/p>\n “Oh, this? I\u2019m reading \u2018Jordan Yoshita’s Go-Go English!\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n Jordan Yoshita!?<\/em> Katta instantly assumed a diver\u2019s crouch, prepping to plunge.<\/p>\n His… uh, situation was dangling right in front of him.<\/p>\n “This book\u2019s hilarious, Obachan!”<\/p>\n Tomoyo quickly explained to the older woman the infamous \u201cWear pantyhose, wear pantyhose. No mind, no mind\u201d scene.<\/p>\n “Then that makes you one in a million, Tomoyo. Impressive!”<\/p>\n Katta began to wonder if \u201cimpressive\u201d had anything to do with what she just saw\u2014but more shocking was the realization that someone so nearby was reading the same book!<\/p>\n Forgetting to cover his manhood, he blurted toward the front desk:<\/p>\n “I have that too!”<\/p>\n Tomoyo turned, gasped, and said:<\/p>\n “Obachan\u2026 that looks exactly like my grandpa\u2019s.”<\/p>\n With that soul-crushing moment burned into his heart, Katta spent the weekend mulling it over in their tiny 4.5-mat room, trying to understand what she meant by \u201cexactly like.\u201d<\/p>\n Then the phone rang.<\/p>\n Naiyo answered and immediately covered the receiver with her hand.<\/p>\n “It\u2019s the police. You weren\u2019t caught peeing in public again, were you?”<\/p>\n \u201cPeeing in public,\u201d or tachishon<\/em>, is exactly what it sounds like.<\/p>\n “Could it be… about the bathhouse?” Katta raised an eyebrow\u2014but only for a moment. His expression softened into puppy-eyed curiosity.<\/p>\n “Oh! I remember. I picked up 1,000 yen on the street a while ago and turned it in at the koban.”<\/p>\n Hope renewed, he answered the phone.<\/p>\n “Hello?… Yes… I see… No, I understand. Today at 2:00, got it. Thank you… Good work!”<\/p>\n “\u2018Good work\u2019?” Naiyo shot back. “He\u2019s a cop, not your coworker!”<\/p>\n She had a point.<\/p>\n “Hey, everyone\u2019s tired from work, y\u2019know.”<\/p>\n “So\u2026 do you get to keep the money?”<\/p>\n “No idea.”<\/p>\n Naiyo sighed and headed out, claiming to have a junior high reunion to attend.<\/p>\n Want to read more?
