Hello, this is Frank.\"Review<\/img><\/p>\n

This is my personal review of \u201cWristwatch\u201d<\/em> by Masaki Kojima, included in the anthology \u201cMystery All-Stars\u201d<\/em> (Edited by the Honkaku Mystery Writers Club, published by Kadokawa Bunko).<\/p>\n

To get straight to the point\u2014I felt it needed one more twist. Here\u2019s why: the line, \u201cI was utterly fascinated by the <XXX> peeking out from under Kieko\u2019s right hand,\u201d appears early on. Given that it directly matches the book\u2019s title, I couldn\u2019t help but think, \u201cYou\u2019re revealing that now?\u201d<\/p>\n

If it were up to me, I would have titled the book \u201cSerendip\u201d<\/em>. In the scene where the culprit speaks after the robbery, I wouldn\u2019t reveal the <XXX> outright\u2014instead, I\u2019d have him mutter, \u201cIt\u2019s a Serendip, isn\u2019t it?\u201d Even if the reader doesn\u2019t know the meaning yet, they\u2019d realize the culprit took something from the leftover items, sparking curiosity.<\/p>\n

Later, when a freelance female reporter interviews the culprit, she could ask, \u201cOh dear, what time is it now?\u201d\u2014subtly planting a clue. This would add intrigue for the reader.<\/p>\n

Additionally, I\u2019d have that same reporter visit a shop to repair her <XXX>. There, she\u2019d overhear the staff saying they had tried to call Kieko\u2019s home about the warranty period for her <XXX>, only to get no answer. This would help the reader link the crime scene with the stolen item.<\/p>\n

And finally, I would have wrapped it up with the theme of how an ill-fitting Serendip ultimately leads to the culprit\u2019s downfall. Revealing the <XXX> in the very first chapter felt like a missed opportunity.<\/p>\n
