Hello, this is Frank. <\/p>\n

This is my impression after reading \u201cBungaku Shoujo\u201d<\/em> (\u201cThe Literary Girl\u201d) by Takataro Kigi, included in My Best Mystery IV<\/em>, edited by the Mystery Writers of Japan (published by Bungeishunju). Spoiler Alert<\/span>.<\/p>\n

First, let me say that tracing the life of the protagonist, the literary girl Miya\u2014from her days at a girls\u2019 school to her final breath\u2014left me with a deep ache in my chest.<\/p>\n

Each chapter title\u2014\u201cDeath of Father,\u201d \u201cStepmother,\u201d \u201cMarriage,\u201d \u201cLove,\u201d \u201cIdeology,\u201d \u201cPlagiarism,\u201d \u201cPrison,\u201d and \u201cLiterature\u201d\u2014if taken in chronological order, paints a picture of a life interwoven with both moving moments and profound sorrow. I resonated with author Shizuko Natsuki\u2019s words in her own afterthoughts: each rereading inevitably overwhelms her with tears, stopping her in her tracks.<\/p>\n

Particularly heartbreaking is the fact that Miya, a true literary soul, had her work plagiarized\u2014an event that left her feeling that \u201ca lifetime\u2019s hopes, aspirations, and painstaking efforts had been utterly reduced to nothing.\u201d The despair she must have felt is beyond words.<\/p>\n

In the epilogue, as Miya speaks to her teacher on her deathbed, she says, \u201cThose who have anguished over literature will offer lifelong gratitude to the one who discovered them.\u201d As an amateur writer myself, those words struck me to the core.<\/p>\n

If you are intrigued by the small universe that Miya carried within her heart, I highly recommend reading this story. And if you enjoy it, I would be delighted if you also explored my own full-length social mystery novel, The Mysterious Rouge<\/em>.<\/p>\n
