Hello, Frank here!
Today’s post is about <Manzai comedy>, a traditional form of Japanese stand-up comedy.
[Question]
Lately, I just can’t laugh at modern manzai at all. Does this mean I’m just out of touch with the times? I watched several recent M-1 Grand Prix performances, but not a single one made me laugh. (Anonymous)

Since the question is anonymous and I don’t know your age, I can’t say exactly why. But honestly? I felt the same way—you’re not alone. I couldn’t laugh either. Especially when I saw who actually won—I was completely shocked. Like, “*Wait, THAT duo won first place!?”*
In short, it feels like manzai is only getting laughs within the entertainment industry bubble. It doesn’t really seem to connect with the general public anymore. Differences in life experience, environment, or even comedy literacy might be to blame.
If watching it just leaves you feeling stressed or confused, then seriously—don’t force yourself. Instead of manzai, why not pick up a good novel? You’ll probably find it much more enriching and satisfying. ✨
