Hello, this is Frank.

Recently, I was watching a match by Sota Fujii, the seven-title Shogi champion, and one particular proverb truly resonated with me.

――Never flee a fork.

Shogi is a game full of deep strategies, and among them is the phrase, “Never flee a fork.” This saying teaches us that when two of your pieces are threatened at once, it’s not always best to run. Instead, it’s important to search for alternative moves.

In the world of Shogi, the best move must be found based on the current position. Even in situations where two pieces are under attack, simply escaping may not be the optimal choice. Sometimes, it’s possible to find a move that actually turns the tables in your favor.

For example, you might capture an enemy piece with the one that is threatened, or launch a counterattack. With the right creativity, even a dire position can become an opportunity for a comeback.

This lesson applies not only to Shogi, but to life itself. When facing tough situations, simply running away is not always the answer. Exploring a new approach can be essential. Such moments are when your true strength and creativity are tested.

“Never flee a fork” is more than just a tactical idea in Shogi; it serves as a valuable principle for life. By facing adversity head-on, we can unlock new possibilities and overcome challenges.

When Fujii found himself facing a fork by a knight targeting both his gold and silver generals, he showed no sign of hesitation and continued his aggressive play. In that moment, I felt I witnessed the very essence of a true seven-title champion.
