Hello, this is Frank.

As someone who once worked at a trading company, let me weigh in on this question.

Of course, it depends on the person’s appearance and personality, but the basic answer is: “Yes!”

People often say, “Because they earn high salaries,” and sure, that’s easy to see just by looking at the average annual incomes of Japan’s top five trading companies.

But I believe there’s something even more important: communication skills.

Let’s say you’re at a mixer — five guys, five girls. A trading company guy will usually try to liven up the atmosphere with conversation. Why? Because trading company professionals are naturally service-minded.

Without this sense of service, you’d never succeed in real-life business negotiations either. Sure, some quiet types have found success, but in general, the ability to entertain — in this case, to engage women — is absolutely essential.

Some of my students in my practical business English course often attend mixers too. Occasionally, one of the ladies will grumble, “Teacher, last week’s mixer was a total disaster.”

When I ask why, they say something like: “All the guys were quiet, just talking among themselves. It was so boring.”

If it were me, I would never let that kind of situation happen.

Trading company guys are professionals in both communication and negotiation. And generally speaking, “Women just want someone who’s fun to talk to ♪” — and who could argue with that?

Being attractive isn’t always what makes someone popular. Often, it’s just the ability to hold a good conversation. Sure, being cool doesn’t hurt, but being bad at talking? That’s tough even among other men.
