Hello, this is Frank.
When my two children were in middle school and high school, I used to make them lunch on days when the school didn’t provide any meals.
The menu was very simple—usually just tamagoyaki (Japanese rolled omelet), sausages, and a hamburger patty.
Preparing their lunchboxes before heading to work was pretty tough, but I always tried my best because I never wanted my kids to feel hungry or neglected.
Though I felt a little guilty about the lack of variety, I always made those lunches with love.
The greatest joy for me was when they came home with empty lunchboxes and said, “Dad, the bento was delicious!”
I think they were being considerate toward me, but even just seeing their cheerful faces was enough to make me feel truly happy.
Now that they’re adults and living on their own, I still make ozoni (New Year’s mochi soup) for them every New Year. It’s a small tradition I want to keep.
These days, we haven’t been able to go shopping together as a family of three, but I’m looking forward to the day when we can enjoy shopping and a meal together again.
