Hello, this is Frank.
“Chasing the Night” by Naoki Prize-winning author Jō Sasaki is marketed as a suspense thriller. Sadly, it didn’t quite resonate with me—a former trading company man.
――A stormy night in Naha. A man on the run from the organization crosses paths with a woman he once loved.
<A Masterpiece Suspense-Romance from a Naoki Prize-Winning Author> — so the cover boldly claims. Perhaps my reading comprehension is lacking, but despite the hype, I just couldn’t feel the tension the novel was supposed to deliver.
The exposition inserted between lines of dialogue felt excessive, and the character portrayals never really clicked with me. I found it difficult to connect emotionally with anyone in the story.
――Two lives that never intertwined now collide dramatically in the face of danger.
This pitch line. I won’t call it overhyped, but I do find it remarkable that Shueisha chose to release a revised edition.
It’s not really comparable, but I’ll just say this: the tense nights I spent walking alone through Central and South American cities as a trading company employee felt far more thrilling.
As I said earlier, there’s a strong chance my reading comprehension just isn’t up to par, so if you’re curious, give it a read and draw your own conclusions.
