Hi there, this is Frank.
I’d like to share my impressions of this gripping short story by quoting some insightful commentary found at the end of the anthology.
Compared to ‘Yoru wo Isogu Mono yo’ by Jo Sasaki, this story gives off a stronger, more masculine vibe.
The opening line, “He’s about to crack.”, immediately sets the tone—it’s classic Yokoyama, diving right into the psychological tension of police interrogations.
The use of an AED (Automated External Defibrillator)—a device more commonly associated with medical emergencies—as a narrative device is particularly fresh and inventive. It adds a layer of realism and technical intrigue that will resonate with crime fiction fans.
The emotional unraveling of Motoko under pressure is portrayed with masterful precision, delivering a satisfying depth rarely seen in short form narratives.
As the story reaches its epilogue, a line from L Prefectural Police First Division Investigator, Yoshio Kuraishi, hits home:
“Everyone decides their own path in life.”
“Don’t flatter yourself into thinking you can change someone else’s destiny with your words.”
This is the kind of gritty, hard-boiled detective fiction that lingers long after the final page. Despite its short length, it leaves you with the satisfaction of a full-length novel.
A short story that feels like a full-length thriller.
