Hello, it’s Frank.
On a whim, I decided, “Why not review high school English?” So I signed up for the Japan Chamber of Commerce and Industry’s English Proficiency Test — a challenge mostly taken by high school students in Japan.
To be honest, I was a bit hesitant about sitting among teenagers, but once I got there, it felt like I had time-traveled back to high school. It turned out to be a surprisingly fun and nostalgic experience.
It was a “totally cold turkey” test for me — I didn’t study — and to top it off, the test center was far away, meaning I had to wake up at 5 a.m.. I was groggy, and during the listening section’s first question, my mind was completely foggy.
This middle-aged guy’s focus lasted about 10 minutes at best. The latter half of the listening part? I’ll be honest — I just winged it.
While mumbling to myself, “Man… studying is definitely easier when you’re young,” I sat in the back row — the lone general examinee — gazing at the backs of motivated high school students in front of me.
One month later, I called the school to check my result. To my surprise, the teacher said, “You passed with high marks!” That was a relief.

About two weeks after the results, the certificate finally arrived. The design was sharp — absolutely love it.
Touching base with high school English again turned out to be an awesome, refreshing experience. If this story sparks your curiosity, I highly recommend giving it a try yourself!
