Believe it or not, this is a real example of how people write text messages using abbreviations.
Back when I was working for a trading company, we used a telex machine for sending and receiving messages. To save time and space, we often used abbreviations like these.
When sending messages to hotels, we even encoded them for extra privacy. Basic abbreviations weren’t enough—some were real ciphers, especially when we handled highly confidential instructions.
It was like working as an undercover agent. The excitement wasn’t just about flying overseas—it was also about decoding encrypted orders and operating under the radar.
Here’s the expanded version of the text message above:
I need your help. I can’t go to Sally’s because my car broke down.
Please pick me up at Park Street on your way. Thanks. See you later.
That’s casual, but in business, especially with export operations or buyer visits, we often received orders from HQ in code—only decrypted using a random number table.
