Hello, this is Frank.Paralegal

It’s been about seven to nine years now, but today I’d like to revisit a legal role that caught my attention thanks to the hit Sunday drama on TBS, “99.9: Criminal Lawyer”.

As the title suggests, the “99.9” refers to the astonishing conviction rate in Japan’s criminal court cases—meaning that 99.9% of prosecuted defendants are found guilty.

The drama follows a young and relentless defense attorney, Hiroto Miyama (played by Arashi’s Jun Matsumoto), who refuses to accept that remaining 0.1% as a given and digs deep to uncover the hidden truth. Personally, I found this fascinating, perhaps because I had dabbled in English debate back in college, which often mimicked the back-and-forth of real legal battles.

Now, let’s talk about the term introduced in the show: “Paralegal.”

According to Wikipedia, a paralegal is “a person qualified by education or training who performs substantive legal work under the supervision of an attorney.” In short, they support lawyers by handling standardized, legally relevant tasks that don’t require a law license.

The prefix “para” means “alongside” or “supporting,” so a paralegal is essentially a legal assistant or law clerk. Legal secretaries and legal administrative staff also fall under this category.

“99.9: Criminal Lawyer” was part of a wave of drama series featuring professionals—lawyers, doctors, detectives—that was hugely popular at the time. Looking back, that trend now feels nostalgic, like a snapshot of another era.
