Hello, this is Frank.
From the title alone, you probably know who I’m referring to. Yes—it’s Sota Fujii, the remarkable young shogi player who, at just 18, became the youngest in history to hold both the Kisei and Oi titles.
I’ve always admired the sincerity of his interview responses. But among them, one comment after the Oi title match stood out to me the most:
“Winning four straight matches was beyond my expectations. I believe the results exceeded my actual abilities.”
These words reflect a model attitude—one grounded in humility, discipline, and emotional maturity. It’s an outlook that even adults, myself included, can learn from.
The phrase “unexpected blessing” (bougai no gyoukou) refers to “a stroke of good fortune beyond what one hoped for” or “an unforeseen happiness.”
It’s a beautiful expression—genuine joy delivered with humility, never with arrogance. Perhaps it’s the uncompromising world of shogi that has shaped the weight and depth behind his words. Whatever the reason, they resonate deeply.
If possible, I hope he avoids appearing on lighthearted TV variety shows. There is something noble, almost solitary, about his spirit. I’d like to see him continue pursuing his own path with clarity and conviction, free from unnecessary distractions.
As of April 16, 2025, Sota Fujii now holds seven major titles. His growth shows no signs of slowing. I truly believe his presence will continue guiding the shogi world toward an even brighter future.
