【Preview】My Beloved Target: A Glimpse into a Hard-Boiled Tale of Espionage and Awakening

Hello, this is Frank

I’m excited to present to you the synopsis and a preview of my long-form hard-boiled novel, My Beloved Target. I hope you’ll enjoy this glimpse into a story filled with suspense and emotion.

【Synopsis】
A middle-aged woman quietly approaches a man lying in a hospital bed. Just before administering a drug, the man suddenly awakens, and her plan collapses. The man is Tadashi Akinai, who had been in a vegetative state for 15 years following an accident in Malaysia. The woman is Machiko Hanamuko, someone Akinai once used in his espionage operations.

One week later, Machiko hands him an envelope containing a letter and photographs, then leaves his side. The letter reads: “Fifteen years ago, you were involved in espionage operations as an agent…” After reading it, Akinai is gripped by a sense of danger and rushes out of the hospital.

The story then flashes back to fifteen years earlier—

This long-form hard-boiled novel follows Tadashi Akinai, a former trading company employee turned intelligence agent, as he uncovers and challenges a national conspiracy.
With a total word count of approximately 138,391 characters, My Beloved Target is a gripping entertainment story brought to you by <Frank>.
Please take a moment to dive in.

Chapter 1: Awakening

Machiko Hanamuko’s right hand trembled ever so slightly.
In her grasp was an insulin syringe. The needle’s tip, a mere 0.2mm—33 gauge—was outfitted with a special double-tapered structure that offered virtually no resistance for fluid injection.
Room 305 in General Ward A had four beds, yet only one patient—a man—and Machiko were present.

Moments earlier, a nurse’s station had received an emergency call from another room in the same ward, reporting a seizure. Several nurses had rushed out in response.
With no staff in sight, Machiko glanced at the man lying supine in the bed. She slowly lifted the blanket. A pale, gaunt arm was revealed—she identified the site for injection.

“Goodbye,” she whispered.

Controlling the tremble in her wrist, she drew the syringe closer.
Her left hand brushed the man’s cheek with a tender farewell, fingers gliding over the contours of his jaw.
Then, as if her touch breathed life into him, the man’s eyelids weakly fluttered open.

“Who… are you?”
The man’s voice reached Machiko’s ears—and in the very next moment, his hand shot up and seized her wrist tightly.

The shock shattered her resolve like dry leaves in the wind.

Panicked, she stashed the syringe back into her shoulder bag, glanced quickly around the room, and let out a scream.
“D-Doctor—!”

Her shrill voice echoed through the ward like an alarm bell.
Without using the emergency call system, she ran straight to the nurses’ station.

One of the two nurses on standby placed a calming hand on Machiko’s shoulder.
“Please stay calm. What happened?”
“T-Tadashi… he woke up!”
“What? Mr. Akinai!?”

With the nurse, Machiko dashed back to the room and rushed to his bedside.
“Mr. Akinai! Can you hear me?”

The nurse, with arms like coiled springs, shouted into the man’s ear.
“Tadashi! Hey, Tadashi!”

Machiko’s voice broke into sobs—a desperate plea, as if begging the gods for mercy.
The man’s body stirred, and his eyelids opened once more, just barely.
His lips moved faintly, as though trying to form words.

The attending physician arrived after being contacted.

“This… this is a miracle,” he murmured.
