Hi, I’m Frank.
I’d like to introduce you to my short, socially-conscious mystery micro-novel “The Pitfall.”
Below you’ll find a brief synopsis and a sneak peek from the story. I hope you enjoy reading it!
【Synopsis】
Set in a small Japanese company specializing in surface-mount technology equipment and its client, a major consumer electronics manufacturer in a neighboring country, this mystery unfolds across cultural and corporate boundaries.
On the eve of an overseas business trip, our protagonist—the head of the overseas sales department—has a meeting with the company president. The next day, he flies out to oversee a machine installation.
When a technical issue arises days later, he has no choice but to send the engineer back to Japan. Seeking advice from a Japanese consultant managing the local production line, he is drawn into a mysterious tale revealed during a late-night conversation…
This is the sixth entry in the “Slightly Mysterious Anthology” series. At approximately 4,504 characters, it’s a quick yet thought-provoking read. Highly recommended for fans of socially conscious mysteries.
【Sneak Peek】
Suddenly, the fluorescent light—knocked out by the storm—flickered back to life, flooding the room with a sharp glow.
It was the night before my departure. Even by evening, the air outside remained thick and damp with humidity.
I had held a meeting with the engineers until around five o’clock, then stayed back with the president until just before eight, discussing emergency response plans.
The job awaiting me overseas wasn’t particularly difficult. Still, having just transitioned into a new role, I wasn’t entirely comfortable saying, “Leave it to me,” without hesitation. I believe I merely said, “Understood,” to reassure the president.
Outside the window, insects swarmed the streetlight, forming a restless halo.
The president eyed them with a curious expression. That must’ve been his signal that the meeting was over. He picked up the remote from the table and switched off the air conditioner with a firm press.
“You’ve got the morning flight, right? I’m counting on you,” he said in that typically blunt tone small business owners often have.
“There’s no time difference, so if anything comes up, just give me a call.”
I nodded silently.
I rose from the sofa and stepped out of the office.
It must’ve been right then—
“Alright!”
I heard the president’s voice behind me.
