Hello, this is Frank.

After a divorce, it’s only natural to feel empty — your wife is no longer by your side. I felt the same. It’s as if everything you’ve worked so hard to build has suddenly vanished into thin air.

Of course, you might feel like drowning it all out with alcohol, just to forget everything. But we’re human — it’s not that easy to forget.

It might be okay to have a few drinks for a couple of days, to help reset your emotions. But if that goes on for too long, your child will start watching your back…

They’ll start thinking, “Ever since Dad split up with Mom, all he does is drink.”

Keep that up, and soon they’ll begin to lose respect. And if during that time you bring another woman home, you’re setting yourself on the path to complete family breakdown.

What I recommend is this: above all, after the divorce, stick to a regular, disciplined routine. If your children are still young, shower them with love and attention. Balancing work and parenting is tough, but this is the time when it’s most important to remain a strong and steady father.

That’s why it’s vital to work hard. There’s no such thing as a “more important” or “less important” job. The father who takes his work seriously — he’s the coolest in his kid’s eyes.

If you stay present and do your best during your child’s younger years, it’ll build your mental strength. When you’re in your 40s or 50s, you’ll find yourself able to be even more compassionate toward them.

To all the single fathers out there — keep showing up for work today, just like every other day. That’s what matters most.
