Hello, this is Frank.
I’m not exactly sure why, but as a single dad, I never wanted to show up to my child’s parent day looking worn out or lifeless. So I always tried my best to act like the most energetic dad in the room.
Even though I already tend to stand out, one time I wore a bright red button-up shirt to parent day. Not only did my child turn to look at me, but so did every student in the classroom. Even the teacher looked slightly uncomfortable trying to keep the lesson on track.
When we got home, I apologized to my child, saying, “Sorry if I embarrassed you today.” But instead of being upset, my child smiled and said, “Dad, you stood out and looked super cool!” I’ll never forget how happy that made me feel.
Hearing students whisper, “Hey, that’s Yoshida’s dad,” made me feel proud. After that, I made it a point to dress in bright colors and walk confidently into the school whenever there was a parent day.
Maybe I went a little overboard. But to all the single dads out there: on parent day, don’t be afraid to show up as the best version of yourself. Let your kids see a strong, energetic dad they can be proud of.
