Hello, this is Frank.
I’d like to share my thoughts on this short story collection, quoting a particularly insightful review from the end of the volume.
Unlike the more matured works of Hideo Yokoyama, this piece struck me as rather naïve.
If I may put it this way, it felt like a case of “constipation of language.” I struggled to find the right words, but that’s the image that kept surfacing throughout the read.
“W-what is that?”
“Big bro, that guy… he’s Christ.”
“Yeah, I kinda figured. He stands out—with the beard and the hair.”
“He’s got a whole character going.”
“Yeah. That’s important, I guess.”
“Don’t you think God is really scary, big bro?”
This dialogue occurs between the main character—an older brother—and his childhood friend, Sashara, now an overweight teenage girl living across the highway from him.
Their conversations, while delivered in a flat tone, occasionally reveal lines that seem too mature for a middle school girl like Sashara. It made me question—Is she really just a teenager?
Her speech patterns didn’t align with my own sense of realism, which made it hard for me to fully engage with the story. But as the story reached its climax, the reason behind Sashara’s insatiable appetite was finally revealed.
“What do you hate? Who?”
“…My father.”
Sashara said no more than that.
To me, this story lacked a sense of realism. Perhaps it’s a world that someone like me—who has walked a life thick with mud and grit—simply cannot connect with.
