Hello, this is Frank.
I’d like to share my thoughts on a fascinating short story collection, quoting some insightful commentary included at the end of the book.
The story begins with a dramatic incident: a man falls to his death from the top of Tokyo Tower, which stands 333 meters tall. Though it might be an exaggeration to say “news spread like wildfire,” the incident became a top story within four hours of the first report.
The drama unfolds as two part-time workers, the narrator “I” (Doeda) and his colleague Kawano, both employed at the gift shop “Taimon Trading” inside the tower, begin discussing the incident.
Soon after, the shop’s quirky and cartoonishly kind-hearted owner joins their conversation. However, he too ends up murdered in a similar fashion.
Before his death, the owner tells Doeda and Kawano: “Right, I need to let you both know… Apparently, a detective is coming.”
According to him, “someone high up in the Tokyo Tower management” has called in the detective to investigate the first death. Later, someone who appears to be the detective shows up—but his behavior and words are bizarre. Then, a petite high school girl suddenly appears at the shop.
As Doeda gets involved with both the supposed detective and the mysterious schoolgirl, new truths come to light. One line, in particular, lingers in the reader’s mind:
“[Name] has confessed to everything… Their motive? ‘Because the world without a story is just too boring.’”
The characters—Doeda, Kawano, the shop owner, and Kitamura the convenience store clerk—are all vividly drawn. However, to be honest, I felt the epilogue could have used more impact.
It ends in a way reminiscent of a TV drama. If the conclusion had boldly confronted the contrast between the surface and underside of society, the entire plot might have had a stronger finish.
But I suppose that reflects the author’s own philosophy as a writer.
