Hello, this is Frank.
Let me share my thoughts on this short story collection by quoting a particularly insightful review found at the end of the volume.
It’s been a while since I devoured an entire book during my 50-minute commute—but that’s exactly what happened here.
—Keiko Maeda stared into the portrait of her late husband.
The story opens not so much like a novel, but like a vivid TV drama playing right in front of your eyes.
Keiko, a nurse, marries twice—only to lose both husbands in tragic accidents.
Her first husband, Koichi, dies in a car crash. Her second, Hideaki, perishes in a fire.
Enter Nobuhito Natsume, a former juvenile detention officer turned detective, who begins his investigation into these seemingly unrelated incidents.
As the narrative unfolds, the suspect becomes somewhat predictable. Yet what truly keeps the pages turning is the intricate psychological dynamic between Keiko and her son Yuma. Their mother-son relationship is layered, and the exploration of their subconscious emotions adds compelling depth to the reading experience.
“…used Mr. Yasuoka (who was terminally ill with cancer and had only a short time left) for his own ends.”
But who was the person who hung their head in shame at Natsume’s words?
The detective’s final words in the epilogue might have hit harder if delivered not as a lecture, but more like a quiet murmur.
