Hello, this is Frank.
People often ask me about the average life expectancy of trading company employees. Even if scientific data exists, it only reflects the past. Personally, I find myself thinking, “So what?”
Some former traders live well into their 90s. Others—still in the game—die suddenly in their 40s or 50s from overwork. It happens more often than you’d expect.
Your department matters. So do your working conditions. And of course, your personal health and genetics play a part.
Looking back on my experience at a trading company in the late ’70s and ’80s, I’d say, “If you live into your 80s, you’re doing great.”
I’m talking about the kind of intense workload we faced: constant overseas travel, long-term postings abroad, client entertainment, and endless overtime. Honestly, if I’d stayed on that path, I probably would’ve dropped dead before hitting 60.
But the reason I left the trading world wasn’t the workload. It wasn’t toxic colleagues either. It was because I couldn’t shake the emptiness of clinging to a company and chasing profit for its own sake.
I wanted to do work that was creative—where I could build my own brand and express who I am.
Even if it was just a small operation, I couldn’t let go of the dream of building and running something of my own. That’s why I went independent—and I’ve never regretted it.
There’s something I often tell my online students:
――Drive your business; don’t let your business drive you.
You control your work. Don’t let it control you.
If you’re in charge of your own time, your average life expectancy as a trading company employee may go up. If work controls you, it’s bound to drop—fast.
Time management and your mental outlook—those are the keys, I believe.
