Hello, this is Frank.

This is a question that probably stumps not only trading company employees but also many men in general:

“Do businessmen cheat while working abroad?”

Having spent years traveling internationally myself, I’ve met countless Japanese expats and business travelers—from trading company reps to consultants. Many have, unfortunately, lost themselves in alcohol and women while overseas.

Of course, not every man who gave in was a trading company employee. But for many, after long hours and exhausting cross-cultural work, alcohol and female companionship became their go-to sources of comfort.

Especially those who are great communicators—like many trading company men—tend to attract attention not only from Japanese women but from women abroad too. And when women draw closer, the temptations multiply. It’s not uncommon to hear of affairs sparked by this dynamic.

In my short romance novel “What should I do without you? (Can’t let you go!)”, there’s a line that goes:

“It’s not men who bring men back to reason. It’s women.”

Even men trying to act rationally can’t always resist intense temptation. There’s a breaking point, it seems. So maybe it’s not that “businessmen cheat”—but rather, they’re surrounded by too many chances to do so. The real story is a daily struggle of inner conflict and restraint.

So, is the question “Do trading company men cheat?” really a fair one?

Maybe not. Maybe it’s the wrong question entirely.
