Reflecting on Those Who Lifted Me

Today is a quiet day—one of those rare moments when memories resurface of the many people who have helped shape my life. Faces, moments, and kindnesses, all come back in waves.
“A Wife of Humble Days Should Never Be Cast Aside”
This timeless phrase comes from a story in the Book of the Later Han, in the biography of Song Hong.
Princess Huyang, sister of Emperor Guangwu of the Later Han dynasty, wished to marry Song Hong—a man of virtue and stature—after losing her husband. The emperor, hiding the princess behind a curtain, tested Song Hong by saying:
“Now that you’re successful, why not take a new wife?”
Song Hong replied:
“I have heard it said: ‘Never forget the bonds formed in hardship, and never cast aside a wife who shared your poverty.’”
The phrase “wife of humble days” refers to one who endured with you through the toughest times—eating only rice bran and sake lees. No matter how high you rise, she must not be dismissed.
Even Shigeru Yoshida, the fiercely independent postwar Prime Minister of Japan, reportedly wept quietly beneath a fir tree after the funeral of his beloved wife Yukiko.

Former Prime Minister Yasuhiro Nakasone once spoke at the funeral of his wife Tsutako, who passed away at 91. He shared the story behind her name:
“Her name came from the vine—tsuta—which clings to the tree and keeps it from falling.”
Surely, she was his own wife of humble days.
