Hello, this is Frank.
— The Quiet Power of a Wooden Rooster.
This is one of my favorite stories.
It comes from ancient China, during the Warring States period. The story features King Xuan of Qi and a legendary rooster trainer named Ji Sheng Zi.
King Qi was obsessed with cockfighting. He hired Ji Sheng Zi to train a champion rooster. But the king was impatient. Just a few days after training began, he asked the trainer:
“Is it ready to fight yet?”
Ji Sheng Zi shook his head and replied,
“Not yet. The rooster still gets too easily agitated. It needs more training.”
Several days passed, and the king asked again.
“Still not ready,” said Ji. “It reacts to every provocation from its opponent.”
More time went by. Finally, Ji Sheng Zi nodded and said,
“Now it’s ready.”
When the rooster entered the arena, it didn’t flinch, didn’t crow, didn’t attack. No matter how much it was provoked, it remained perfectly still—like a rooster carved from wood.
The other roosters were unnerved by its calm presence. One by one, they backed down. The king’s rooster won—without even lifting a claw.
This is the essence of true growth.
Genuine strength isn’t flashy—it lives in stillness, in quiet confidence.
This is the meaning behind the saying, “The state of a wooden rooster.”
Don’t underestimate someone just because they seem plain or quiet.
The strongest people are often the calmest and most grounded.
As the upper house elections approach, I can’t help but notice how many candidates seem to misunderstand this idea completely.
