【Memoir】That One Summer I Learned the Hard Way: Never Mess with a Hornet’s Nest

Hello, this is Frank.

It must have been during one of those long summer breaks in early elementary school. A few friends and I had decided to go hiking in the hills near our neighborhood.

Along the way, we stumbled upon a small clearing and started playing a game of rock-kicking. We were full of energy until fatigue set in, and we decided to rest under a large tree.

Something made me look up—and there it was. A huge hornet’s nest dangling ominously from a branch.

For some reason, we got the reckless idea to throw rocks at it. I know. Bad idea. After just a couple of throws, one stone hit the nest dead-on.

And then—it happened.

A swarm of about 20 hornets came buzzing out and charged straight at us.

We ran like hell. But two or three of them clung to one of my friends’ heads as if targeting him specifically.

“Aaaah!”
“Run!”

The screaming quickly turned to crying.

We kept running for about a minute, away from the clearing.

“It hurts! It hurts!” he cried, clutching his head.

Strangely enough, the hornets never came after me. I still don’t understand why.

Thankfully, my friend only had some swelling and nothing worse. But that day, I learned firsthand how dangerous hornets can be.

Had he been allergic to the venom, it could’ve been fatal. This wasn’t just child’s play—it could’ve been a real tragedy.

One might say, “It was either him or the hive,” but let’s be honest—some things are better left untouched.

――Let sleeping dogs lie.

Or as the Japanese saying goes, “Don’t disturb a god, and you won’t be cursed.
