Hi, I’m Frank.

I must have been in lower elementary school when it happened――on a school field trip to Mount Wakakusa in Nara.

After a walk through the park, it was time for lunch. Everyone sat on the grassy slope of the hill to eat.

I took a seat next to my classmates and pulled out the lunch my mom had packed for me. “Itadakimasu!” I said cheerfully.

But just as I unwrapped the cloth and opened the lid, the lunchbox slipped from my left hand. The rice balls inside rolled down the slope of Mount Wakakusa.

I was devastated. My mom had made those rice balls with care, and I had dropped them just like that. I felt miserable.

“Yoshida-kun, are you okay?”

My teacher rushed over. But through my tear-filled eyes, I could barely see her face.

“Shall we pick up your mom’s rice balls together?”

Her gentle voice gave me strength. Together, we gathered up what we could.

(…Mom, I’m sorry…)

With those words in my heart, I ate one of the rice balls my teacher kindly shared with me.

After the trip, my teacher even came to my house to explain everything to my mom. Through her actions, she conveyed the feelings I couldn’t express.

Thank you, sensei… truly, thank you.

Even after all these years, I still remember the warmth of her words.
