【Healthcare】My First Gastroendoscopy: Smooth, Simple, and Surprisingly Painless

Hello, this is Frank.

It was exactly six years ago when I had my first gastroendoscopy (examination of the stomach using an endoscope).

That morning, I walked about 40 minutes to the hospital for some light exercise. I hadn’t eaten anything since 11:00 PM the night before, so I was low on energy, but the cool autumn breeze felt amazing.

After checking in on the first floor, I headed up to the 4th floor to the gastroenterology department’s endoscopy reception. I arrived about an hour early, planning to relax and catch up on Yahoo! News on my tablet. But as soon as I got to the counter, they asked me to get ready.

I entered the changing room with lockers. It turned out I only needed to change my top, so I kept my slacks on. Honestly, the mismatch between the exam top and my pants was so awkward I couldn’t help but chuckle.

Soon after, my name was called, and I was led into a consultation room. The nurse handed me a paper cup and said, “This helps eliminate bubbles in the stomach.” I gulped it down—it had almost no taste. Then a needle was inserted into a vein for the sedative, and I was guided into the procedure room.

I lay on my back on the bed, then held a jelly-like liquid in my mouth without swallowing as instructed. It was slightly bitter and strange—turns out it was a local anesthetic for the throat.

Then the doctor arrived and injected the sedative through the needle. I turned to face the doctor’s side, and within five seconds… I was out cold.

When I woke up, I was already in the recovery room. I stayed seated until the grogginess wore off.

What an incredibly smooth process. The whole thing was over before I knew it. It was nothing like the scary stories I had seen online about endoscopy exams.

The endoscopy procedure at the T Hospital was truly top-class. Highly recommended. You’re probably wondering, “Wait—where is this ‘T Hospital’?!” I know, I know.

Just goes to show what professionals can do—and yes, the doctor looked cool too.
