Hello, this is Frank.

These days, Zoom is a household name for online meetings and chat. I first started using it about six years ago, when the COVID-19 pandemic began.

Having spent years teaching and counseling via Skype, I initially assumed Zoom wouldn’t be much different. But to my surprise, it offers a host of features that make online communication far more engaging (Skype has now transitioned to Microsoft Teams).

Zoom has opened my eyes in many ways. Like Skype, it has a handy chat function, but it also goes far beyond that: screen sharing for files and audio, an interactive whiteboard for two-way drawing, and the ever-useful breakout sessions for pair or group work. All these features create a dynamic and interactive learning experience.

Breakout sessions, in particular, save time by automatically assigning pairs or groups. As a host, I can join different sessions to observe group discussions and check students’ skill levels. The ability to instantly toggle video and audio on or off is a huge plus.

When I searched “Zoom” today on Yahoo! Japan, it returned about 37,900,000 results—a clear sign of its massive popularity. Beyond its ongoing security improvements, I look forward to seeing what new features and add-ons will be introduced in the future.

I’m still far from mastering every aspect of Zoom, but whenever I discover a clever new way to use it, I’ll be sure to share it here. Stay tuned!
