Hi, this is Frank.
――47 Tips to Avoid Being Killed by Doctors
This might sound like a provocative title, but it’s actually the name of a book.
My father passed away from pancreatic cancer. He was staying at home for a while before being hospitalized, but my older brother, who lived with him and was caring for him while working, hit his limit. So Dad had to be admitted to the hospital.
Just a few days before that, he was still able to crawl from his bed to his wallet to give some spending money to his grandchild. But once he was admitted for tests, his body started to weaken rapidly, and he began to drift in and out of consciousness.
“We know it was tough taking care of him at home, but maybe… just maybe, if he had stayed with us, he might’ve lived a little longer.”
That’s what the three of us brothers said to each other after he passed.
It was the same with our mother. Seeing her completely dependent on medication broke our hearts. We knew in our heads the drugs were meant to relieve pain or slow the cancer, but still—it was incredibly painful to watch.
To be honest, I’ve seen my fair share of terrible doctors—rude, uncommunicative, even outright arrogant. But I’ve also come across a few truly amazing ones, and those experiences have stuck with me.
I don’t visit hospitals much myself, so I don’t know all the ins and outs. But I still want to believe that most doctors genuinely want to help their patients and are doing their best to treat them.
After all, we all have lives to live. That includes doctors too. But when I’ve come across those working purely for profit—especially those chasing an extravagant lifestyle—it’s left me feeling deeply saddened.
Of course, not getting sick at all would be ideal. But even if everyone in the country became so healthy that hospitals were no longer needed, I’d still be happy to pay national health insurance taxes. Because at the very least, I believe doctors deserve to be supported.
Instead of shunning doctors, maybe what we need is to respect them—as part of a system that coexists with us and helps us feel safe.
I personally think AI is going to become so advanced that in the near future, only 10–20% of today’s doctors will still be needed.
Doctors who never make eye contact and just stare at their screens.
Doctors who don’t even try to communicate with patients.
Doctors who only write prescriptions and never stand by the patient’s side.
It doesn’t seem far off that these kinds of doctors will be the first to disappear.
Here’s the book I mentioned at the beginning. If you’re interested, feel free to check it out.
