【Preview】A Touch of Mystery: White Rose — A Short Story Preview

Hello, this is Frank.

Allow me to introduce the synopsis and a short preview from my slightly mysterious short story anthology, White Rose. I hope you’ll enjoy this glimpse into the tale.

【Synopsis】

The third installment in the anthology series A Touch of Mystery. The narrator, living far from his family, departs Japan just before Christmas to reunite with his wife and children living in Central America—after two long years apart. Torn between career and family, he is forced to make a choice that will change everything. This short piece runs approximately 4,947 characters in length. A poignant question from his child leaves him utterly speechless…

The airplane banked sharply to the right, and from my window seat, I could see the runway below.

We were about to land—

It was Christmas Eve, thirteen years ago. I had just arrived in San Pedro Sula, the main gateway to the Republic of Honduras, with a strange mixture of anticipation and nostalgia.

This was my second visit to San Pedro Sula. Unlike my first trip—dressed in a crisp business suit—this time I wore a backpack, and carried suitcases brimming with Christmas presents and Japanese groceries in both hands.

Waiting for me at the airport were my wife, who had come back to visit her family, our nine-year-old daughter, six-year-old son, and my wife’s younger brother—four people in all.

It had been two years since I last saw my family.

“You really came…”

My wife smiled warmly. I had taken an early winter vacation, squeezing it into my busy schedule, and flown halfway around the world to be here.

The drive from the airport to her family’s rural home took about two hours.

For the first hour, the car was filled with cheerful voices and excited chatter, but gradually the conversation faded into quiet.

As I gazed at the peaceful countryside passing by the window, memories of my first overseas business trip—when I met my wife—came flooding back.

After graduating from university, I joined a mid-sized trading company headquartered in Honmachi, Osaka. From day one, I was assigned to the Central and South America Export Department. By my third year, I had finally grown accustomed to writing business correspondence in Spanish.

Then in October, I received my first overseas assignment: a two-month trip starting in Canada and continuing through Mexico, Trinidad and Tobago, Curaçao, Guyana (then a British territory), Ecuador, Colombia, Costa Rica, and finally Honduras—before looping back to Mexico.

In mid-November, I was scheduled to fly from San José, the capital of Costa Rica, to Tegucigalpa, the capital of Honduras. That morning, I woke up with a fever of 39°C (102°F) and could barely lift myself from bed.

However, having already arranged a meeting with a key buyer weeks in advance, I had no choice but to push through. Despite my condition, I boarded the early morning flight to Honduras.
