【Mindset】How Much Is Enough? What Public Servant Salaries Say About Happiness

Hello, this is Frank.

According to an older report from the Ministry of Internal Affairs, featured in a 2019 Toyo Keizai Online article, based on 2017 salary data, the highest average salary for local government employees in Japan was in Atsugi City, Kanagawa—7.51 million yen (approx. $69,000 USD/year). Tokyo’s Suginami Ward came in second (7.43 million yen), followed by Mitaka City (7.34 million yen).

More recently, this data from U-Can offers a helpful reference. Looking at these numbers, I couldn’t help but think—hey, local public servants earn more than I expected!

After the top-ranking Kanto region cities, several municipalities from Hyogo Prefecture suddenly shoot up the list. Turns out my own city wasn’t an exception either.

Now, comparing these figures with salaries in the private sector? That’s a rabbit hole I’d rather not go down. Whether a job pays more or less, what matters is whether you actually want to do it—and whether it gives your life meaning.

I once heard that the feeling of “financial comfort” plateaus around 7 to 8 million yen per year. Beyond that, extra money often just gets spent on flashy luxuries or to show off.

As for me, I’m not exactly in a position to be worrying about other people’s salaries. Instead, I write this blog as a way to find mental peace and a sense of personal wealth.

There are people who live happily on just 100,000 yen a month, and others who earn over 10 million yen but still feel miserable. In the end, it’s all about mindset—how you think can make or break your happiness.

Why is it that people who boast about earning over 10 million yen rarely seem to give off a “happy vibe”?

――Happiness does not depend on how much money you have,
  but on how you think.
