Hello, this is Frank.
Many of you probably know the movie Bayside Shakedown starring Yuji Oda. The English title is “Bayside Shakedown,” with “shakedown” meaning a thorough search or investigation.
The film is packed with memorable quotes, but one of the most iconic lines comes from Oda’s character, Shunsaku Aoshima:
“I don’t have subordinates—only teammates.”
I once wrote about the concept of “human warmth and empathy (ninjō)”, and Aoshima’s honesty in showing his emotions might be the embodiment of that idea.
But today, I want to highlight two different quotes from the film:
[Shunsaku Aoshima (Yuji Oda)]
“Even if you don’t climb the ranks, you can still do the right thing. Even if it takes longer, if you believe in yourself, you can do the right thing.”
[Heihachiro Waku (Chosuke Ikariya)]
“Don’t give up. Your wishes will come true. Who knows what kind of world we’re heading into… But stick to your beliefs. Be someone who supports the weak. Just sayin’.”
See the common thread? Yes—conviction.
Every time I hear the word “conviction,” I think back to my days working in a trading company.
“Yoshida, what is this English? Are you even trying!?”
“You think a little college English is enough to make it here? Wake up!”
I was yelled at by my bosses almost daily. I often went home frustrated, thinking, “I’ll prove them wrong someday!”
Looking back now, I realize I was just a hot-headed rookie.
But if there’s one thing I never let go of, it was this conviction: I will become someone who writes with such precision that no boss could ever find fault in my words again.
That unbreakable drive—that’s what shaped who I am today.
I was rarely praised back then, but maybe my bosses had their own form of conviction too. Even if it meant being disliked, they were determined to toughen me up and turn me into a capable professional.
One day, I was waiting for a train when I noticed a scruffy-looking kid with dyed hair on the opposite platform. Just before my train arrived, I looked up again—and saw him quietly pick up trash near his feet and throw it into the bin.
It struck me: even more than some “elite” office worker who’d ignore litter, that kid had class. He had something inside him—a conviction that certain things shouldn’t be left undone.
“Even if you don’t climb the ranks, you can still do the right thing. Even if it takes longer, if you believe in yourself, you can do the right thing.”
At that moment, I remembered Aoshima’s words.
The world of online business isn’t fueled by dreams and hope alone. If you don’t have the conviction to serve people and genuinely be of value, you won’t last.
Bayside Shakedown: The Final – The New Hope. If you haven’t seen it yet, I highly recommend it.
