Hello, this is Frank.
Today’s topic: blowing your top — those moments when we just snap.
It turns out that these sudden bursts of rage may be linked to a temporary malfunction in the brain. There’s a part of the brain called the prefrontal cortex that helps control our impulses, and it relies on a chemical called serotonin. But when you’re under stress or exhausted, serotonin levels drop, and impulse control weakens.
Lack of exercise, irregular sleep patterns, and overexposure to screens also lower serotonin. Welcome to the hidden trap of digital life.
As I’ve grown older, I rarely blow up anymore. Still, if I’m sleep-deprived and witness someone behaving irrationally, I do feel that inner spark of irritation.
Ultimately, the best antidote is a regular, balanced lifestyle. My late father was a man of strict routines. Looking back, I wonder if his daily discipline was less about structure and more about choosing calm — about not taking frustrations out on others and keeping the day peaceful.
Writers may seem like the least likely people to live on a schedule, but maybe a steady routine is exactly what we need to write something truly great.
By the way, I’ve started reading this controversial book, How to Write Bestselling Fiction. It’s received mixed reviews. But whatever you think of it, please don’t blow your top after reading it! (Just kidding.)
