【Healthcare】Why I Haven’t Been to the Hospital in Decades: A Personal Take on Medicine and Prevention

Hello, Frank here.Top Interview Questions

To begin with, a few words to mark the launch of this health blog.

Throughout my life, I’ve only been hospitalized once. It happened during my first year of high school. In the middle of the night, I was hit by a sudden stomachache and ended up calling an ambulance.

But here’s the twist—by the time the stretcher arrived at my house, the pain had mysteriously vanished. I stood there debating: Should I admit I felt fine, or pretend I was still in agony?

In the end, I thought, “They came all this way—might as well go to the hospital,” and chose to continue moaning in pain inside the ambulance.

When we got to the hospital, the doctor took one look at me and said,

“You’re fine, right? Nothing serious. Just stay overnight as a precaution.”

Busted. Instantly. The way he saw through me with just one glance—I knew then and there, doctors are true professionals. Even I felt ridiculous pretending to be in pain.

Since then, I’ve never had any major health issues. No hospital stays. No expensive treatments.

I share this because it reflects something important: I’ve spent almost nothing on healthcare in my life.

But looking at Japan today, I see a society obsessed with medications and vaccines, while overlooking the fundamentals of preventive care and healthy living. I sometimes wonder if over-reliance on medicine is actually weakening our natural immune systems.

To be honest, I believe that if people led healthier lifestyles, we wouldn’t need 90% of the doctors we currently rely on. Of course, I’m not referring to those with genetic conditions or accident-related injuries. But for lifestyle-related diseases, we might be moving toward a future where individuals bear the cost of their own health negligence.

Japan’s sky-high social insurance premiums are unacceptable. The current ruling party won’t fix it—I plan to support any party that genuinely works to lower these premiums. And no, I’m not talking about the Japan Innovation Party.

So let’s stay healthy. And that’s my introduction—from someone who doesn’t even carry life insurance.

Thank you for reading today.
