【Leadership】Why Top CEOs Choose a $1 Salary――Lessons on Long-Term Value and Leadership Mindset

Hello, this is Frank.

Recently, while browsing the news, I noticed again that Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg and Google co-founder Larry Page have set their own annual salaries at just $1.

Of course, I had known about this before, but it made me wonder again: why would they go so far to limit their pay? In a world where “working to earn money” is considered the norm, their actions may seem odd at first glance. However, there is a deeply symbolic message here that modern business leaders should take note of.

First, the $1 salary reflects a clear and unwavering mindset: prioritizing long-term corporate value and social impact over short-term income.

They already own substantial shares, so their main source of income is stock appreciation and dividends. In other words, their personal achievements equal company growth, and the salary itself is not essential. This approach sends a strong message: they are not working for money, but are driven by a mission and vision.

Next, this action is not mere performance—it significantly contributes to corporate culture and external trust. By keeping top executives’ salaries extremely low, the company communicates a clear priority on value over profits, boosting employee morale, investor confidence, and customer loyalty.

Furthermore, as this mindset spreads through media and society, it enhances corporate branding, which in turn can positively impact stock prices and the executives’ wealth—a highly strategic structure.

This philosophy also directly applies to online businesses. Many entrepreneurs and solo business owners naturally focus on “immediate revenue” in the early stages. Yet, from a long-term perspective, improving user experience and building trust are what create stable profits and competitive advantage.

Accumulating value over short-term profit and nurturing trust as a brand—this is a sustainable growth strategy in the digital age, and $1-salary CEOs truly embody this principle.
