Hey there, it’s Frank.
Back when I worked for a trading company, I was constantly flying overseas. Friends would always ask me, “Hey Frank, have you ever been attacked while traveling abroad?”
And my answer? “Oh, absolutely.”
Let me tell you about one of the craziest experiences I’ve ever had. I was in my mid-twenties, just a few days into my assignment in Georgetown—the capital of Guyana, way up in the northeast of South America. One morning, I was walking from my hotel to a bank to exchange some US dollars for the local currency. Out of nowhere, a guy jumped me on the street and started choking me from behind.
I honestly thought I was going to die. Instinct took over—I slammed my right elbow as hard as I could into his side. That’s when he stabbed me near my waist with a knife he was holding in his left hand.
And just like that, he ran off.
To this day, I’m not sure if it was my belt that saved me, but somehow, I got away with just a minor injury.
I immediately sent a telex to my company’s headquarters in Osaka. Their reply came back fast: “Be careful.”
When I told my local client what happened, they said, “If you’d fought back any harder, you might have been killed.”
Even after that, I kept traveling to all sorts of places for work. I figured, “Hey, I’ve already had a brush with death—what’s left to fear?” So I kept exploring, even in places that weren’t exactly the safest.
Life’s short, right? Why not go for that exciting trip you’ve always dreamed about? You never know what stories you’ll come home with.
Thank you for reading today.
