【Career】Stand Out or Step Aside: Why Initiative Matters in Job Interviews

Hello, this is Frank.

First, let me share a real story from one of my English students’ job interviews.

She was a senior at a prestigious national university—one of the former Imperial Universities—with excellent grades. She started job hunting and, without much trouble, made it all the way to the final interview at a major company. So far, so good. Pretty standard stuff.

But here’s what happened at the final interview. The remaining candidates—several dozen students—were divided into groups of five. Each group would be interviewed together. When it was my student’s group’s turn, they lined up side by side in front of the executives, and the interview began.

The recruiter opened with this:

“Alright everyone, please discuss this topic together.”

But none of the five students, including my student, moved a muscle. They just sat there in a straight line… You can probably guess what happened next.

All five members of that group failed the interview. No surprises there. If you’re wondering “Why?”, you might want to pay close attention to your own interviews from now on.

I understood immediately. If you can’t even take the initiative to break the ice and move from a stiff, formal lineup, how can a company trust you with important work in the future? If you freeze up when asked to discuss something, it shows a total lack of initiative.

If it were me, I’d jump in and say, “Hey, let’s form a circle so we can talk more easily.” That’s how you stand out from the crowd.

Listen up, everyone. Don’t just try to be a “good person.” Be someone who knows how to make an impression. If you’re content to blend in, you’ll always be stuck with back-office jobs.

Even if you graduate from a top university, if you have a bureaucratic mindset, you’ll never make it to the front lines in the private sector.

Thank you for reading today.
