If you ended up on this site because you Googled something like “What should I write for hobbies on my resume?” — well, maybe you’re not ready for interviews just yet. I mean, if you’re that nervous about a simple section on your resume, how are you going to make it through a real interview?

Let’s be honest — writing some generic hobby just to check a box doesn’t help anyone. Sure, if you’re applying for a government job where uniformity and rule-following are expected, a cookie-cutter answer might work. But in the private sector, where flexibility and adaptability matter, there’s no such thing as the “right answer” for hobbies.

You could say that civil servants are judged by their knowledge of hobbies, while corporate employees are judged by the wisdom they gain from them.

When it comes to private companies, it’s not about how much you know about your hobby. What really matters is how much you enjoy it — how alive and passionate you are about your life. That’s what employers notice.

So don’t stress about what to write in the “hobbies” section of your resume. Honestly, if a recruiter is grilling you over that, it might be a red flag about the company culture. If they care that much about such a trivial detail, what kind of work environment do you think they offer?

And even if you do manage to give the “right” answer and land the job, would someone that cautious and boxed-in really thrive in a fast-paced global workplace?

So stop worrying. Speak confidently about what you love. If a company rejects you for that, they probably weren’t worth working for in the first place.
