Hello, this is Frank.
“ITOCHU: The Samurai Traders Reclaim the Throne!”
How many years has it been since I first came across this headline from NEWS Post Seven? What truly caught my eye back then wasn’t the “throne reclaimed” part—but rather the term “samurai traders.”
Transitioning from a resource-heavy business model to a more diversified, non-resource-based approach—
This bold shift, as reported, was driven by the strong leadership of Masahiro Okafuji. It wasn’t just strategic—it was a break from a rigid, bureaucratic corporate culture, and a return to a freer, more daring company spirit.
Back when I was a trading company rep myself, the term “samurai traders” was used almost naturally.
Perhaps that’s why the phrase still resonates with me so deeply—it carries the raw, intense energy of my younger days.
— If it’s cheap and good quality, even a fool can sell it. That’s not a trader’s job.
— If you’re going to collapse, collapse at the company’s frontlines!
I grew through countless trials, harsh words, and relentless pressure.
That’s why ITOCHU’s rise—despite not being part of the traditional zaibatsu elite—strikes a powerful chord with me.
Today, I’m concerned by how foreign companies are aggressively encroaching on the Japanese market, especially in the electronics sector.
I strongly hope that more “samurai-like” companies like ITOCHU will shake things up and rewrite the rules of Japanese business once again.
Keep fighting, Samurai Traders!
