Hello, this is Frank.
During my time working for a trading company, I frequently traveled abroad. People often asked me, “Have you ever been attacked overseas?”
My answer? “Of course, I have.”
In my mid-20s, just a few days after being assigned to Georgetown—the capital of Guyana, located in the northeast of South America—I was on my way from the hotel to the bank one morning to exchange U.S. dollars for the local currency. That’s when I was suddenly mugged on the street and strangled from behind.
I genuinely thought I was going to be killed. I struck the man hard in the side with my right elbow, but he stabbed me around the waist with the knife he held in his left hand.
The man quickly fled.
I’m not sure if it was thanks to my belt, but luckily, I escaped without serious injury.
I contacted our headquarters in Osaka via telex and immediately received a reply: “Be careful.” On the other hand, when I reported the incident to our local business partner, they said, “If you had struggled more, you might have been killed.”
Even after that, I traveled abroad many more times. I remember boldly walking through dangerous areas during my travels, thinking, “I’ve already survived one situation where I could have died.”
You only live once. So let’s take on exciting journeys and make unforgettable memories—starting with travel right here in Japan.
