Hello, this is Frank.
Honestly, I’ve made plenty of mistakes and messed up more times than I can count, so I’m not really in a position to preach about “mindset” to anyone. But since I’m still growing and learning even at my age, I hope you can take the best bits from my experiences.
I’ve mentioned this in my English classes before, but whenever I run a debate class, about 80% of students end up quitting every year. Most of them are women, but lately, I’ve noticed more men who prefer stability and harmony are dropping out too.
The main reason?
“I enjoy the class, but when it comes to actual debates, I feel like I’m being personally attacked, and it gets tough.”
Even though they know in their heads that it’s just a debate, emotionally it’s hard not to think, “Who does this person think they are, saying that to me?!”
Interestingly, the 20% who stick with it are all returnees who’ve lived abroad.
I’m only human too――I get frustrated and angry sometimes. But now that I’m older, I’ve realized, “Getting worked up is just bad for your health.” That’s how I try to see things now.
Debate is a competitive activity, so of course it stings to lose, and sometimes things get under your skin. But the real purpose of debate isn’t just about winning or losing. It’s about thinking deeply: “Which side would actually be better for society?” and making decisions based on that.
That’s why what really matters is what comes after the win or loss――having the humility to think, “If my side had won, maybe it would’ve actually caused problems for society.”
I’m still a work in progress myself. That’s why I believe it’s so important for us to share our opinions, push each other to grow, and keep improving together. That’s the positive mindset and way of life that debate can teach us.
Building a you who doesn’t run away from tough situations――that’s so important, don’t you think?
