Hi, I’m Frank.
We often hear people say, “Trading company jobs pay really well.” And it’s true—many people dream of becoming a high-earning corporate trader. But behind the impressive salaries lies a reality most don’t see.
In this post, let’s dive into what it’s really like for trading company employees making over 10 million yen a year—and the challenges they face along the way.
1. The Reality of Earning 10 Million Yen
Salaries at trading companies are definitely on the higher end. Hitting 10 million yen (roughly $100K+) annually by your early 30s isn’t unusual. But when you break down the numbers, some interesting facts come to light:
- Base Salary: Around 4.8 million yen/year
- Bonus: Over 3 million yen/year
- Overtime Pay: 2.5 to 2.8 million yen/year
As you can see, much of the high income actually comes from long working hours and generous bonuses—not just a big base salary.
2. The Struggles Behind the Pay
- Long Working Hours
High income comes at a cost—lots of overtime. In many cases, overtime makes up over a quarter of total annual income, which makes work-life balance a real challenge.Speaking from personal experience, in my first year, I often worked past midnight. On the rare occasion I got home around 9 PM, my mom would be surprised and ask if I was sick.
- Intense Competition
Once you reach management level, there can be a salary gap of 3–4 million yen depending on performance. This competitive environment can be very stressful and even affect mental health. In my case, I wasn’t interested in managing people—I was passionate about doing business. So I traveled overseas a lot and was able to avoid that stress.
- Seniority-Based Culture
Many trading companies still follow a seniority-based system. That means younger employees often feel frustrated when their abilities and efforts aren’t reflected in their pay.
3. The Perks and Excitement
- Global Opportunities
Trading company employees often get chances to work abroad—and when they do, they can earn nearly double their domestic salary. - Great Benefits
This depends on the company, but perks like company housing for single employees are pretty common. - Huge Career Growth
If you climb the ladder, you could earn anywhere from 20 to 40 million yen a year—or even over 100 million yen if you reach executive level.
So yes—earning 10 million yen a year at a trading company sounds great. But it comes with long hours, fierce competition, and a few tough realities. That said, there are also plenty of exciting rewards, like global work experience and strong employee benefits.
As you aim for a high income, don’t forget to think about what matters to you—whether it’s work-life balance, self-fulfillment, or something else entirely.
Will you become a company man or a lone wolf like me? The choice is yours.
