Hi there!

I’ve told you before that I like flying Singapore Airlines. Nothing personal to all of Japan’s Airlines; I would say too much condescending or insipid pleasantries services are the last choice that I go onboard.

Today, let me challenge a word problem related to the airplane topic, my favorite genre, as my cup of tea.

A plane has traveled 28 miles on a course heading 60°east of the north. How far north (x) has the aircraft traveled to the nearest tenth of a mile at this point?

Here is my solution to the problem.

\(\sin30° = \frac{x}{28}\)
\(x = \sin30°・28 = \frac{1}{2}・28 = 14\)

Therefore, the aircraft traveled 14 miles north.

Today’s answer is simple: I expect an airline company to provide in-flight services as simple and elegant as possible, just like Singapore Airlines.
