One day in Guayaquil, Ecuador, after business negotiations with my client, the C.E.O. invited me to go fishing the following Sunday. It was a big mistake that I accepted his offer in a jocular spirit.
What an early riser he was! I had to wake up at three in the morning, and he picked me up at the lobby of my hotel at four. At the risk of my repetition, I would say, “Four!? I am not in charge of bidding on fish gathering from all over the country!”
We went on his boat and started fishing; however, sooner after we had dropped some bait, a large school of piranha began biting it off, and our hook and line were immediately gone.
“Flabbergasting” is put mildly; “mind-boggling” … that’s the best-suited word. Sleepy, mind-boggling, fishy smell … It was a hell of a day, to be honest.
Today, let me challenge a word problem related to a fishing boat. Isn’t that fishy?
Your fishing boat started to come loose from the dock. You grabbed the line before it got too far. Your dock is 60 inches above the water level. The line you are holding onto the end of is 10 yards long. What is the angle of depression to your boat at this instant? Round off your answer to one decimal place.
Here is my solution to the problem.
1 yard = 36 inches, so 10 yards = 360 inches.
Let’s Find \(\sin\theta\) first, then arc sine by using an alpha calculator [a scientific electronic calculator] because we need to find the angle of depression.
\(\sin\theta = \frac{60}{360} = \frac{1}{6}\)
\(\theta = \sin^{-1}(\frac{1}{6}) = 9.5940…\approx 9.6°\)
